Smithville to Continue Road Repairs and Paving with New Data on Street Conditions

by | May 7, 2024 | Public Safety & Services, Smithville

SMITHVILLE, TX — Smithville’s city-wide street and paving project is making substantial progress, as outlined in the latest update from City Manager Robert Tamble. The initiative, which aims to enhance and maintain the city’s infrastructure, utilizes advanced technology and collaboration with Freeland Turk Engineering Group, LLC (FTEG) to assess road conditions thoroughly.

The assessment, carried out using Roadbotics technology, evaluated approximately 40 miles of city-maintained roadways and over 600 street signs. Each of the 850 street segments in Smithville was rated from 1 (“Green”) for minor or no damage, to 5 (“Red”) indicating major damage or critical failures. The results showed 49.18% of segments in the “Yellow” category, reflecting significant surface issues that need attention.

This detailed evaluation is part of a broader effort to prioritize and address infrastructure needs effectively. Notably, this is the second survey conducted by FTEG, with the first in 2020 leading to targeted maintenance on 106 critical segments. To date, repairs have been completed on nearly half of these segments, demonstrating the city’s commitment to its infrastructure.

In addition to repairs based on the Roadbotics report, the city has proactively addressed areas not covered in the survey, including multiple local cemeteries and streets like Harper Street and King’s Way. The upcoming summer months will see the Bastrop County Maintenance Department, in collaboration with the city, undertaking significant paving and repair work.

Residents are encouraged to report any potholes via the Smithville SEE/CLICK/FIX link on the City website or through the SCF mobile app. This community-focused approach ensures that Smithville not only addresses current infrastructural needs but also maintains the quality of life for its residents through continuous improvement.

The city will release a comprehensive list of upcoming road paving and repair projects next month, providing further insights into the planned improvements and maintenance schedules designed to enhance Smithville’s road network.
