SMITHVILLE, TX – The City of Smithville is set to replace the aging playscape at Vernon L. Richards Riverbend Park. Starting Monday, May 13, 2024, the old structure will be removed, with the new and improved playscape scheduled to open before the Memorial Day weekend.
Located alongside the Colorado River in Smithville, Riverbend Park is a key recreational site, named after former mayor Vernon Richards. The existing playscape, installed more than 25 years ago, has suffered from extensive wear and tear and is due for an upgrade. The new installation, the “Moon Bounce” playscape system, is tailored for children ages 5-12 and includes sensory panels, climbers, and multiple slides across approximately 2,200 ft² of play area.

The upgrade has been financially feasible thanks to a significant grant secured by Ashley Garrison, Director of the Smithville Recreation Center, reducing the project’s cost by nearly fifty thousand dollars. The remaining expense, totaling $80,000 including installation and ADA-compliant fiber mulch, was funded through the Series 2023 Tax Note approved by the City Council.
Riverbend Park serves as Smithville’s premier outdoor spot and hosts several community events including the annual Jamboree celebration. The park features a variety of amenities such as a walking trail, fishing pier, barbecue pits, and a 9-hole disc golf course. It also includes a covered stage and dance floor in the “Chuckwagon Square,” ideal for parties and special events, alongside sports facilities like a lighted softball field and sand volleyball pits.
The park’s playscape area, popular among younger visitors, will soon feature the updated playscape, ensuring enhanced play opportunities in a safe and modern environment. The project reflects the city’s commitment to maintaining and improving its recreational facilities for residents and visitors.
As the community anticipates the reopening of the playscape, Riverbend Park continues to be a focal point for recreation and community gatherings in Smithville.
